Rockcast Thursday.10.08.09a; Hawk Nelson, Kiss, Billy Davis, Foreigner, Phelegathon, Alice Cooper, ZZ Top. Elwood, Built To Spill

It was the fall of 1981. I was working a dead end job at
record store in a mall in Dallas Texas. I was bummin' when
an old friend came into the store and invited me to lunch.
Now in the 1980's lunch for me mostly consisted of an
occasional appetizer and about 4 or 5 cocktails. We were
in one of those pubs you find in a mall. Eating potato skins
and sipping kamakazis. When someone behind me started
to make an announcement. He said the bar would be closing
in 10 minutes for a private party and anyone who wanted to
stay was welcome. Only thing was once the doors were
shut nobody could leave for 2 hours. I turned around to
see who this was talking and there in front of me was Dusty
Hill, Billy and Frank. Z Z Top had a new album, El Loco
and this was one of the release parties. If you look at the
L.P. cover you will see it is the Top in jumpsuits in the
desert with burlap bags of weed. I have one of those
promotional burlap bags with "El Loco - ZZ Top"
printed in pink. It hangs here in the studio. Although after
all these years and me sticking pins all over it you can
barely see it. Years later I crossed paths with Dusty
again when I pinstriped his Caddy, but that's another
story for another time. Enjoy the set. A Huh Huh Huh.

In Houston a 24 year old woman was convicted of wreckless
driving charges which resulted in a mans death. The unusual
circumstance in the evidence were phone records which showed
she was on the phone when she jerked her car from the center to
the far right lane in order to try and make an exit ramp she had one
second earlier passed. While on the phone she noticed that the exit
she was looking for was being missed so she changed lanes without
signaling and locked up the brakes which caused the car behind her
to rear end her car. The driver of the other vehicle was thrown from
the wreck and died of sustained injuries. Yesterday she was convicted
and sentenced to only 30 days in jail and 10 years probation.
Convicted of causing a death. Her parents looked real stupid on TV.
First her father was shown saying justice was not served. How
could someone get rear ended and be in the wrong? Her Mother
wondered on camera how could you be convicted of something
that is not illegal? (i.e.talking on cell phone while driving.) First,
her wreckless driving forced the other driver into the back of her
car. Think if you were just drving along when someone pulls in
front of you and stops, you rear end them. Are you at fault?
Even though you hit them?
Second, She was not convicted of talking on the phone.
Although she was damaged by the fact she was.
Nobody voiced remorse for the family who's husband
and father is no longer among us. I hate seeing anybody go
to jail but if this is an example to the public I don't think it will
have an effect. Maybe after a few more people get killed.
Total Bummer 2.

Rockcast Monday.10.05.09a; Def Leppard, Every Mothers Son, Kill Hannah, Tymes, Elvis & The Coconut, Blackfoot, Pearl Jam, Kings X

Another baseball season lost. Once again the Chicago Cubs are
headed home before the playoffs. Once again October rolls around
and I wonder why I wasted my time even following them. The
answer is simple. I am a sucker for baseball and have been most of
my life. Why the Cubs? A team that hasn't won in over 100 years.
Why didn't I become a Yankee fan? At least I would have been able
to celebrate about 10 championships in the years I've been a Cub fan.
It all started I guess because my entire family which is large, is all
Detroit Tiger fans. I wanted a little individuality I guess. A team of
my own as it were. The Cubs lost a bunch but were the only team on
TV every day. It was better than soap operas. Funny thing, recently
the city of Chicago was trying for the Olympics in 2016. When I
heard "Chicago has been eliminated" I thought " yeah us Cub fans are
used to hearing that!" A political cartoon in the Sunday fish wrapper
had the same sentiment. Well there is always football season! ;-)
