Rockcast Wednesday.10.14.09a; Tommy Shaw, Bowling For Soup, Brendan Benson, Badfinger, Eddy Money, American Gun, Jackie Lomax, Rolling Stones, ZZ Top

I saw the sun for the first time in about a week
today. Now for Houston and for me that is a
long time to go in the gray. Of course the trade
off is that the pleasant 70's temps are replaced
by the usual 90 plus and killer humidity.
Today I got to wondering what ever happened to
Kelly Groucutt, Bass player extraordinare for the
Electric Light Orchestra. I was surprised to see he had
died of a heart attack in February. Basketball Diaries
Author and Singer of Friends Who Died, Catholic Boy
Jim Carroll Also. Then today I read Captain Lou
Albano, one of the funniest of the Big time Wrestlers of
the 1960's & 70's has also passed on. Well there's 3.
Three people who I was totally entertained by in my
youth. It seems we get a little bit older everytime a
part of our youth dies. Or at least I do.

There will always be a poem

I will climb on top of it and come
In and out of time,
Cocking my head to the side slightly,
As I finish shaking, melting then
Into its body, its soft skin

--Jim Carroll, "Poem"
from Void of Course (1998)

Rockcast Tuesday.10.13.09a; Jim Morrison, Doors, Infected Mushroom, Pearl Jam, Robert Francis, 5th Dimension, Donovan, Styx

Los Angeles native Robert
Francis has a sense of a
veteran traveler on his new
album Before Nightfall on
Atlantic.The songs tell vivid
stories which allow the
listener to paint their own
picture in one owns mind.
Francis who plays many
instruments has a pleasant voice which at times has just a touch
of falsetto.Think Orbison sings the Boss. Standout cuts on  the
album include the wonderful Climb A Mountain featuring longtime
Francis family friend Ry Cooder on slide guitar. Do What I Can
will conjure up summer days barefoot in love. I Like Air sounds
like a record from the 60's or 70's. Nightfall has a Dylan vibe,
while One By One has an intro worthy of Springsteen. Junebug
is My favorite cut. [so far] A story of kid love and how we
change sometimes not for the better. Time is not kind to some.
For only 21 years old Francis has crafted an album of songs that
seem to belay the life of one older. In fact the entire album has a
warm sound as if the band was set up in your own livingroom.
In all a nice listen with happy stories that are not sappy. Almost a
country feel which thirty years ago would of found him in company
of Dylan and the Band or in modern time, the Wallflowers.

Rockcast Monday.10.12.09a; ZZ Top, Citizen King, Chicago, 10 Cent, Unit 4+2, Allan Sherman, Rolling Stones, Foreigner

Is American Professional Football fixed? First,
let me say it ain't broke! Actually I believe the
question posed to me was "the fix" as in Bigtime
Wrestling, you know the outcome is predetermined.
So yesterday which is pro football day in America
I tuned into the "red zone". It is a channel which
shows every point and spectacular play in every
game played that day. Plus it is all live. No replays.
I love it. You would to if you like switching from
game to game like I do. I have one I watch and
one I use to fill during commercials. So after a
day of monitoring every game in the NFL I say
no way the fix is in. Although I think the refs are
out of hand. They definetely can and do control
the tempo and perhaps the outcome of games.
I saw many calls over looked on one side and
others which were called against the other team
for the same thing. The refs most certainly controled
what was happening. Personally I pay to see the
teams play not to see the refs kill momentum with
their petty calls. A friend from Sweden was watching
a day of football with me and as usual I was flipping
between games. About 20 in the course of an afternoon.
After it was over I asked him how his first time watching
America football had gone. He said he pretty much had
figured out the game except for one thing, why did they
keep changing their jerseys to different colors? He
didn't realise we had watched many games. He thought
it was just one long one. ;-)
